Carn Brea Leisure Centre has launched a swimming pool fundraising appeal to help with a major refurbishment project.

The project, which will start on Monday 31st July this year and be finished in time to reopen on 2nd January 2018, will deal with major repairs and maintenance and at the same time create a bigger, better environment for swimmers.

The charitable trust who run the independent leisure centre, have been successful in raising the bulk of the money needed with help from Sport England and Cornwall Council, and now need to raise a minimum of £80,000 to be able to successfully complete the project.

Alex Clifton, the Trust’s Chief Operating Officer said “We’ve made great progress in raising the bulk of the funds needed to carry out the essential repairs and improvements, but we aren’t quite there and really need the community’s support to help us cross the finishing line.”

The appeal, called ‘Carn Brea Champions’, is asking people to donate or get involved and become a Champion in support of the appeal and create a swimming facility that the local community can really be proud of.

Colin Rowe, Chairman of the board of trustees said “We know our local community and the community of Cornwall are Champions. We’re hoping people will get behind the appeal in all sorts of ways whether donating online, organising a fundraising event or taking on a sponsored sporting challenge. Support via our Champions appeal is vital to successfully completing the works.”

The refurbishment, includes a redesign of the pool, to include an additional learner and fun space and an extension to the existing main pool. There will also be improvements to the pool halls, poolside area and upgraded lighting.

Alex Clifton added, “The pools have remained largely unaltered since they originally opened in 1974 and are fast becoming unfit for purpose and without the forthcoming refurbishment we would not be able to keep them open going forwards.

We appreciate our community of pool users will be inconvenienced during the period the pools are closed and apologise for the disruption, but we’re certain the end result will be well worth the wait.”

During the refurbishment works, it is very much business as usual for the rest of the centre, with the health & fitness facilities, sports hall, squash courts, athletics track and Café all remaining open.

Alex Clifton updated “During the period the pools are closed we really want people to keep coming to the Centre to enjoy the other great facilities and activities we have on offer and we can’t wait for January when we have everything back to normal for our customers and staff.”
